taking part:
We are looking to recruit healthy volunteers aged 18-35 to take part in our studies.
Because the research focuses on auditory perception and is mainly confined to speech, we generally are looking for native British English speakers, who are monolingual. Our studies typically involve either brain imaging or transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) or both. Participants are asked to perform simple speech perception tasks such as listening to sentences while their brain activity is being measured by a brain scanner or is being affected by brain stimulation. The tasks are designed to engage different language processes and are meant to be fairly easy. If you take part in a brain imaging study we will be able to send you a picture of your brain to keep. We are located in central London, close to Euston, Russell Square and King's Cross/St Pancras stations. Click here for a map showing our location relative to nearby Tube stations. Once you arrive, you will need to sign in at Reception where we will typically be waiting for you. If you are coming in for a brain scan, we will bring you to the Birkbeck-UCL Neuroimaging Centre (BUCNI). If you are here for a TMS experiment, we will take you to the Brain Stimulation Lab. Participants are paid £10 / hour for their time. All of the data we collect from you will be held in accordance with the data protection act (1998) and will be kept strictly confidential. We never report data from a single individual – but instead look at data from groups of individuals, so that no-one can be identified. |
